Barroso Lithium Project Advances Towards Approval Amid Growing Demand for Battery Materials in Europe

The Barroso lithium project, situated in northern Portugal, is progressing through its final permitting stages, marking it as one of the most advanced hard-rock lithium initiatives in Western Europe. This project is strategically located in the Barroso–Alvão region, renowned for its rural landscape and rich spodumene pegmatite deposits. As Europe intensifies its focus on establishing a robust battery supply chain, Barroso is poised to play a pivotal role in meeting the continent’s lithium needs.

Projected to yield approximately 200,000 to 220,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate annually, the Barroso project boasts lithium oxide grades between 5.5% and 6.0%. Over an initial lifespan of 12 to 15 years, this output could facilitate the production of around 30,000 tonnes per year of lithium carbonate equivalent, significantly contributing to European electric vehicle battery manufacturing.

The estimated initial capital investment for the project ranges from €650 million to €700 million, reflecting various design modifications aimed at minimizing environmental impacts. These adjustments include a reduced surface disturbance footprint, lower water usage, and the implementation of filtered dry-stack tailings systems instead of traditional tailings dams. The project’s operating costs are expected to remain competitive within Europe due to shallow open-pit mining techniques and proximity to low-carbon grid electricity.

Social and environmental factors have been integral to the project’s development. Continuous dialogue with local communities has led to a smaller mine footprint, improved biodiversity programs, and commitments to local employment and infrastructure development. Although these considerations have lengthened the project’s timeline, Portuguese authorities are positioning Barroso as a model for harmonizing EU critical raw materials policies with land-use protections and community interests.

Should all necessary permits be obtained as anticipated, construction could commence within the next 12 to 18 months, with plans for initial spodumene concentrate production aimed for the 2027-2028 period. The project’s overall success will hinge not only on favorable global lithium market conditions but also on maintaining a strong social license to operate within the Barroso region.
