The Sukari Gold Mine (SGM) has achieved a significant milestone by producing 5.8 million ounces of gold since its inception, according to an announcement by Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi.
Badawi emphasized the Sukari mine’s role as a model of successful mining investment, underscoring its strategic importance in the sector. He reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to supporting the mine’s continued success, particularly through efforts to enhance production and utilize advanced exploration technologies to extend the mine’s operational life.
During his visit to the mine in the Eastern Desert near Marsa Alam, Badawi praised the contributions of partners who won contracts through competitive bidding, bringing valuable expertise and technology to the project.
The minister was updated on the Sukari mine’s investment trajectory, which encompasses exploration, development, production, and management activities. The briefing also highlighted the mine’s commitment to modern technologies and its achievements in maintaining safe operations, promoting gender equality, and executing social responsibility projects. Notably, the mine supports 35 community development initiatives.
Badawi also toured the mine’s solar power plant, one of the largest dedicated to a mining operation. The plant, with a capacity of 36 megawatts and a 7.5-megawatt battery storage system, significantly reduces fuel consumption by 22 million liters annually and cuts carbon emissions by 60,000 tons of CO2 equivalent each year.
